Hearing

Slight hearing loss with no tinnitus up to £6,750 

Partial hearing loss with some tinnitus. The level awarded depends upon several factors, including whether both ears are affected, the extent of the hearing loss, the extent of tinnitus present, and the age of the injured party (the younger person who has to endure hearing loss and tinnitus over a longer period will receive a higher award) - £7,050 to £12,100. 

Mild tinnitus alone or mild noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) alone around £11,250.

Mild tinnitus with some NIHL £12,600 to £14,250.

Moderate tinnitus and NIHL or moderate to severe tinnitus or NIHL alone £14,250 to £28,500.

Severe tinnitus and NIHL £28,500 to £43,750.

Total loss of hearing in one ear often associated with tinnitus, dizziness or headaches - £30,000 to £43,750. 

Total deafness (the higher end of the range of damages for this type of injury includes cases where there is some speech deficit as well as tinnitus - £86,900 to £105,000. 

Total deafness and loss of speech - £105,000 to £134,750. 

Sight

Transient eye injuries - £2,150 to £3,800. 

Minor eye injuries causing initial pain and some temporary interference with vision (depending upon severity of symptoms and duration of impairment) - £3,800 to £8,400. 

Minor but permanent impairment of vision in one eye - £8,400 to £20,200 

Serious but incomplete loss of vision in one eye without significant risk of loss or reduction of vision in the remaining eye, or whether it is constant double vision - £22,750 to £37,900. 

Complete loss of sight in one eye. The award takes account of some risk of sympathetic ophthalmia. The upper end of the bracket is appropriate where there is scarring in the region of the eye which is not sufficiently serious to merit a separate award - £47,400 to £52,750. 

Total loss of one eye. The level of award will take account of age and cosmetic defect - £52,750 to £63,250. 

Total loss of vision in one eye and reduced vision in the remaining eye and/or additional problems such as double vision - £61,500 to £102,000. 

Where there is serious risk of further deterioration in the remaining eye going beyond some risk of sympathetic opthalmia - £92,300 to £175,000. 

Total blindness - £258,500 approximately. 

Total blindness and deafness - £388,500 approximately. 

Taste

Loss of taste - £18,500 to £24,050. 

Smell

Loss of smell - £24,050 to £31,750. 

Total loss of smell and significant loss of Taste - £31,650 to £37,750. 

Total loss of taste and smell - £37,750 approximately.

1.            Hearing loss claim

The Claimant aged 60 sustained bi-lateral hearing loss of 40 decibels over 1, 2 and 3 kilohertz with no tinnitus. 

General damages for injury: £10,000

Future hearing aid replacement: £6,000

2.            Eye Injury claim

The Claimant sustained a penetrating injury to one eye and required a lens transplant with 25% resultant loss of vision in the affected eye.
