Dermatitis refers to an inflammation of the skin and is a term used to describe many different skin conditions. Dermatitis is most commonly known as eczema, a common childhood condition which is also known to be caused by conditions within a person’s workplace. The two most common types of dermatitis are irritant contact dermatitis, and allergic contact dermatitis.

People who come into contact with chemicals, enzymes, dust and other irritants at work without the correct protective clothing can go on to develop dermatitis. The condition will develop on the parts of the body which are exposed to irritants which damage the skin, such as the face and hands.

Irritants that cause dermatitis include coolants, machine oils, chemicals, cement, chlorinated water, dyes, and chemicals in cosmetics. You could be at greater risk of dermatitis if you work with these irritants on a daily basis. Professions thought to be at highest risk of contracting dermatitis include:

  • Hairdressers
  • Hospital staff
  • Construction workers
  • Factory workers, cleaners
  • Engineers
  • Kitchen workers

We will arrange an appointment with a Consultant Dermatologist and they will advise as to whether patch testing is required and we will then often be able to establish precisely the causative agent and consider any treatments open to the client as well as substances to avoid in the future.

Employer's Liability

Your employer should be aware of the effects of any harmful substances you come into contact with at work, and should provide you with protective clothing such as gloves or masks to prevent you from coming into direct contact with the substances in accordance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002.

When dermatitis has developed or worsened because your employer did not fulfil their duty to protect you, contact Carrs solicitors to make a claim for compensation. Whatever your occupation Carrs will aim to get you the compensation you are entitled to for your condition and to cover your medical expenses and make up for loss of income through time off work. We will also claim for your future loss of earnings and/or any disadvantage that you will face on the future labour market due to sensitisation caused by dermatitis.

We act on a no win no fee basis with nothing to pay up front in any case - or at all if the claim is unsuccessful. Only if the case is successful do we seek a contribution towards our costs from the damages awarded at the end of the case. The client keeps the vast majority of the award and is never out of pocket.
