Finger Injuries 

Fracture of one finger with complete resolution of symptoms) - £3,500 to £4,600.

Thumb Injuries 

Minor fractures with recovery within 6 months except for some residual stiffness - £4,600.

Injury requiring fusion of thumb joint or causing damage to tendons or nerves where the functioning and sensation remains moderately impaired (with cosmetic deformity) - £9,300 to £12,100.

Serious injury to thumb to include amputation of the tip, nerve damage, or serious fracture requiring the insertion of wires leaving the thumb cold, ultra-sensitive and with reduced grip and loss of manual dexterity - £12,100 to £16,250. 

Very serious injury to thumb, including cases where the thumb has been amputated at the base and grafted back with virtually no function remaining or where the thumb has been amputated at the interphalangeal  joint - £18,850 to £34,000.

Examples of Hand and Finger injury compensation calculations

1.            A 45 year old process worker suffered a fracture to the head of the second metacarpal of his dominant hand when it became trapped in a packaging machine.  He required six weeks off work and wore a plaster cast for five weeks. Most symptoms had resolved within three years to a minor intermittent  level. 

Damages for injury: £6,500

Loss of earnings: £2,000

Domestic Assistance and non-commercial care: £300

Total damages: £8,800. 

2.            The Claimant suffered severe crush injury to her dominant index finger which required a number of operations in an attempt to save the finger before it was eventually amputated.  The Claimant suffered mild reactive depression, significant functional impairment and cold intolerance that would be permanent.
