Ankle Injuries - £2,350 to £67,500

Ankle Injuries

From minor sprains to minor undisplaced fractures with full recovery within 3 months to 1 year - £3,350 to £5,300.

Modest injuries with complete recovery within approx 2 years - £5,300 to £7,400.

Incomplete recovery residual discomfort, significant scarring or a dignosed increased risk of later arthritis and where the ankle has been left with a tendency to give way - £7,400 to £13,250.

Moderate fractures and ligamentous tears which give rise to some continuing difficulty in walking on uneven ground, or standing for prolonged periods, awkwardness on stairs, irritation from metal plates and residual scarring - £13,250 to £25,750.

Severe injuries requiring a long period of treatment and a lengthy period in plaster, or where pins and plates have been inserted. This leads to significant residual disability in the form of ankle instability and severely limited ability to walk. The level of the award will be affected by such factors as a failed arthrodesis, regular sleep disturbance, unsightly scarring and the need to wear special footwear - £30,000 to £48,350.

Very severe injuries such as transmalleolar fractures of the ankle with extensive soft tissue damage resulting in deformity and the risk that any further injury to the leg might necessitate below- knee amputation. Also cases of bilateral ankle fractures causing degeneration of the joints at a young age so that arthrodesis (joint fusion surgery) is necessary - £48,250 to £67,500.

Achilles Tendon Injuries (ruptured /sprained Achilles tendon)

Sprains with complete recovery within one year £1,250 to £5,000.

Modest injuries with full recovery within 2 years £5,000 to £7,000.

Damage to the achilles tendon causing a feeling of being unsure of ankle support - £7,000 to £12,100.

Moderate injuries to include partial rupture or other significant injury to the tendon. The level of award is dependent on whether surgery is required and the level of continuing pain and functional disability - £12,100 to £20,300.

Serious injuries causing complete division of the tendon which has been successfully repaired but permanent residual weakness remains, with limitation of ankle movements, a limp and residual scarring and no further improvement is likely - £24,000 to £29,000.

Most serious. Severance of the tendon and peroneus longus muscle of the lower leg, giving rise to cramp, swelling and serious restriction of ankle movement causing the injured person to have to permanently give up active sports. Awards in the region of £37,000.
