Ankle Injuries - £1,100 to £26,250

Minor sprains and minor undisplaced fractures where complete recovery takes place within a year - £1,100 to £3,750.

Modest ankle injuries taking over a year to heal - The level of damages depends upon whether there is residual discomfort, scarring or an increased risk of later arthritis and whether the ankle has been left with a tendency to give way - £3,750 to £9,350.

Moderate fractures and ligamentous tears which give rise to difficulty in walking on uneven ground, awkwardness on stairs, irritation from metal plates and residual scarring - £9,000 to £18,250.

Severe injuries requiring a long period of treatment and a lengthy period in plaster, or where pins and plates have been inserted. This leads to significant residual disability in the form of ankle instability and severely limited ability to walk. The level of the award will be affected by such factors as a failed arthrodesis, regular sleep disturbance, unsightly scarring and the need to wear special footwear - £21,250 to £34,000.

Very severe Injuries such as transmalleolar fractures of the ankle with extensive soft tissue damage resulting in deformity and the risk that any further injury to the leg might necessitate below- knee amputation. Also cases of bilateral ankle fractures causing degeneration of the joints at a young age so that arthrodesis (joint fusion surgery) is necessary - £34,000 to £47,500.

Achilles tendon injuries (ruptured /sprained Achilles tendon)

Damage to the achilles tendon causing some loss of ankle support - £5,000 to £6,850.

Complete division of the tendon but where its repair has left moderate functional disability - £10,000 to £12,250.

Where complete division of the tendon has been successfully repaired but permanent residual weakness remains, with limitation of ankle movements, a limp and residual scarring and no further improvement is likely - £17,000 to £20,500.

Severance of the tendon and peroneus longus muscle of the lower leg, giving rise to cramp, swelling and serious restriction of ankle movement causing the injured person to have to give up active sports - £26,500 approximately.

Carrs Solicitors have been very professional and helpful with my workplace personal injury claim and secured an award more than twice the amount that the insurers had offered.
