The leading pharmaceutical company Pfizer has begun to pay compensation settlements to families in Nigeria who were affected in an experimental drugs trial in 1996. The anti-meningitis drug Trovan was trialled on a number of children during an epidemic of the disease in Northern Nigeria, however ultimately lead to 11 deaths and many more severe disabilities. Pfizer has finally agreed to settle the case, despite previously denying liability for the deaths and disabilities of the victims.
